LMPC — Legal Metrology Packaged Commodities (Rules 2011) — covers any pre-packaged commodity sold in India by weight, measure, or count. Importers of pre-packaged consumer goods need LMPC registration with the State Legal Metrology Department, and packaging must comply with mandatory declarations (MRP, manufacturer / importer name, country of origin, net quantity, date of import, customer care).

Do I need LMPC if I'm not the manufacturer?
Yes — as an IMPORTER of pre-packaged goods, you are responsible for LMPC compliance. The Importer's name and address are mandatory on the carton, along with MRP, net quantity, country of origin, and date of import.
Which state should I register in?
The state where your goods first land for retail sale or stocking. Most importers register in Maharashtra (since most imports land at JNPT and stock at Mumbai/Pune). For multi-state distribution, additional state registrations are needed.
What if my product label is non-compliant?
Customs can hold the consignment for re-labelling. State Legal Metrology can issue penalty + seize stock. We do a pre-import labelling review to catch non-compliance before cargo ships.
Is LMPC the same as MRP?
MRP (Maximum Retail Price) is one of several mandatory declarations under LMPC. LMPC is the broader framework — MRP, importer details, country of origin, net quantity, date of import, customer care number, batch number where applicable. All required on the carton.
