Gujarat hosts three of India's busiest container ports — Mundra, Kandla (Deendayal) and Pipavav — each with distinct strengths, draft profiles, hinterland connectivity and customs throughput. For exporters and importers based in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhuj, Gandhidham or anywhere in the Gujarat industrial belt, the choice of gateway materially affects total landed cost and transit time.
This guide breaks down the three, with practical operational notes rather than marketing claims.
At a glance — 2026 throughput
| Port | 2024-25 TEU (annual) | Max Vessel Size | Main Operator | Customs | |---|---|---|---|---| | Mundra | ~7.4 million TEU | 24,000 TEU mother ships | Adani (APSEZ) | EDI port, AEO-aligned | | Kandla (Deendayal) | ~1.8 million TEU | 6,000–10,000 TEU | DPA (port trust) | EDI port | | Pipavav | ~0.9 million TEU | 18,000 TEU | APM Terminals (Maersk) | EDI port |
Mundra is now India's largest container port by far — overtaking JNPT in 2021–22 and pulling further ahead since. It handles roughly 30% of India's containerised foreign trade and is the preferred call for most large container alliances.
Mundra — the default choice for North & West India
Mundra (Adani Ports / APSEZ) is privately operated, with industry-leading turnaround time and the deepest draft on the west coast. Direct services to most major global destinations — North Europe, Mediterranean, US East Coast, US West Coast, ASEAN, Middle East — usually have weekly Mundra calls without transhipment.
Strengths:
- Deepest draft on the west coast (~17m), takes 24,000 TEU mother vessels
- Fastest turnaround time among Indian ports (cargo gate-in to vessel loading)
- Excellent rail connectivity to the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) — daily rake services to Delhi/NCR, Punjab, Haryana
- Dense CFS network in the Kutch belt
- Mundra International Container Terminal (MICT) + Mundra Container Terminal (CT-3) handle most major alliances
Practical considerations:
- Road distance from Ahmedabad: ~390 km (6.5–7.5 hours via NH-27)
- Road distance from Surat: ~700 km (10–12 hours)
- Rail from Gandhidham (sister city of Mundra) to Delhi: ~24 hours via DFC
- Free time at MUNDRA CFSs: typically 5 working days
- AEO Tier-1 importers get green-channel; non-AEO BoE clearance typically 48–72 hours
Best for:
- Container exporters across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh
- High-volume importers shipping from East Asia, ASEAN, Middle East
- Time-sensitive cargo where Mundra's turnaround speed beats JNPT's congestion
- Steel, textile, engineering, agri exporters with rail loading economics
Kandla (Deendayal Port) — the bulk and break-bulk specialist
Kandla, officially rebranded Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in 2017, is older than Mundra and was India's busiest port by tonnage for decades. It's now overshadowed by Mundra on container traffic but remains dominant for:
- Bulk cargo — crude oil, edible oils, fertilisers, coal, salt
- Break-bulk — steel coils, machinery, project cargo
- LPG / chemicals — multiple tank-farm operators
For container traffic, Kandla is a secondary choice — used when Mundra is congested (which happens during peak seasons) or when shipping lines route specific services to Kandla for cost reasons.
Strengths:
- Excellent bulk and break-bulk handling capacity
- Tank farm infrastructure for petroleum and chemicals
- Government-operated (DPA), so port-side regulatory matters are sometimes easier
- Close proximity to Mundra (~50 km), so backup if Mundra congested
Practical considerations:
- Container draft limit lower than Mundra (most vessels under 6,000 TEU)
- Road distance from Ahmedabad: ~340 km (5.5–7 hours)
- Fewer direct services to long-haul destinations — more transhipment via Colombo or Singapore
- CFS network smaller than Mundra's
Best for:
- Bulk cargo (oil, fertiliser, coal)
- Break-bulk (steel, machinery, project)
- Smaller-volume container shippers willing to accept transhipment
- Backup gateway when Mundra is congested
Pipavav — the niche specialist
Pipavav (APM Terminals), on the south coast of Saurashtra, is operated by Maersk's APM Terminals subsidiary. Smaller throughput than Mundra or Kandla, but with a specific operational niche:
- Strong on Mediterranean and West Africa services (geographic positioning helps)
- Excellent for roll-on/roll-off (RORO) — automobile exports from Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai
- Direct services to East Africa and Red Sea ports
Strengths:
- Less congested than Mundra during peak seasons
- Maersk-operated, so service consistency for Maersk shippers
- Strong RORO and automobile export terminal
- Reasonable distance from Ahmedabad and Surat
Practical considerations:
- Lower draft than Mundra, smaller vessel sizes
- Fewer direct services on most lanes (more transhipment)
- Road distance from Ahmedabad: ~280 km (4.5–6 hours)
- Road distance from Surat: ~340 km (5.5–7 hours)
- Smaller CFS network — Continental, Allcargo and a few independents
Best for:
- Automobile / RORO exporters
- Mediterranean / West African / East African destinations
- Maersk-aligned shippers
- Shippers near Surat / Bhavnagar / Rajkot
How to actually choose
For most Gujarat-based exporters and importers, the default answer is Mundra — it has the best draft, fastest turnaround, widest carrier coverage, and best rail connectivity. Reasons to deviate:
- You're shipping bulk / break-bulk / oil / chemicals → Kandla
- You're shipping automobiles or to the Mediterranean → Pipavav
- Mundra is congested (Diwali / Chinese New Year season) → Kandla or Pipavav as backup
- You're near Bhavnagar / south Saurashtra → Pipavav saves road distance
- Your buyer's nominated shipping line only calls one port → no choice
Cost-wise, freight rates from all three are within 5–10% of each other on most lanes. Where the difference shows is inland transport and free time:
- Trucking from Ahmedabad: Pipavav cheapest, then Kandla, then Mundra
- Free time + demurrage: Mundra typically tightest, Pipavav most generous
- Customs throughput: Mundra fastest in raw speed; Kandla and Pipavav less queueing
What WCL does at all three
WCL is licensed as a CHA at all three ports with a physical office in Gandhidham (the township adjacent to Mundra/Kandla) and weekly operational visits to Pipavav. We handle FCL, LCL, break-bulk, RORO and project cargo at all three.
Our Ahmedabad office (Registered Office on Ashram Road) coordinates the booking and documentation, while the Gandhidham team handles the port-side movement. For a quote across any of the three Gujarat ports, share origin/destination/commodity/CBM and we'll come back with rates from each option so you can compare like-for-like.
