Export trade finance: when to ask your bank about TAP support

A basic guide to India Exim Bank's trade support, the bank-led starting point and the shipment facts worth preparing.

31 October 20262 min readBy WCL Editorial

An overseas enquiry can look promising while its payment arrangement remains unresolved. Before planning cargo movement, identify the exact obstacle: the buyer's payment proposal, the banks involved or the documents needed for settlement. A support programme is worth exploring when it addresses that obstacle; it should not become an assumed saving in a freight quote.

What TAP is designed to do

India Exim Bank describes its Trade Assistance Programme (TAP) as credit enhancement for trade instruments, helping commercial banks support cross-border transactions where trade lines are constrained. Its stated objectives include access to untapped markets and wider geographical coverage for exporters, including MSMEs. That makes the bank and transaction structure central to the discussion. See the official TAP overview.

A related government opportunity

Exim Bank's Export Promotion Mission release describes Support for Emerging Export Opportunities as expanding support under TAP through guarantees for LC-backed transactions. It also describes a separate Credit Assistance for e-Commerce Exporters scheme covering eligible working-capital facilities through lending institutions. These are different routes: an exporter should identify the relevant financing problem before asking about support.

The release links to detailed guidelines and says the dedicated portal is for lending institutions to submit proposals and supporting documents. It is not evidence that an individual business has an approved facility. Read the Exim Bank scheme release and guideline links.

Where a practical enquiry starts

For TAP, the bank's FAQ identifies originating institutions such as the exporter's Indian confirming bank or an overseas issuing bank, depending on the instrument. It says an exporter need not already have a credit facility with Exim Bank to seek TAP assistance. Charges depend on transaction factors; the FAQ does not provide one universal price.

A useful first discussion with your bank can therefore begin with the destination, proposed payment instrument, relevant banks, shipment value and timing. Ask which current programme and submission route fit the transaction, what evidence is required, and which costs or conditions remain to be confirmed. Eligibility, terms and approval must come from the responsible institution. The official TAP FAQ provides background, not an approval for your shipment.

How WCL can help

WCL can help organise the shipment facts and documentation questions for your discussions with the bank. Contact webq@wclogistic.in with your route, cargo type and the issue holding up the transaction. This article introduces the opportunity; transaction-specific guidance requires a separate review.
